There are a handful of super-premium estates with demand and prices to match, or sometimes exceed, the grandest names of Bordeaux, but most Californian wines sit at a level affordable by all if only on occasion.
Very good Chardonnays are, perhaps, what the Californians do best, generally wooded but done with style. The Sauvignon Blancs should not be overlooked - Californian Sauvignon is very different to New Zealand, for instance, with less grass and more pretty fruit, they are quite delightful.
