CHÂTEAU FERRIÈRE

2010 3ème Cru Classé Margaux

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification 3ème Cru Classé
ABV 14%

The usual kind of uncompromising sample from Claire Villars, really dense and backward. There's class in its deep purple-fruited, slightly fruitcakey richness, nice oaky spice behind the quite intense black fruit, and there's good balance and acidity too. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2011)

The 2010 Ferrière has a lovely bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and stewed tea scents, classic in style and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well judged acidity and a very cohesive, classically styled finish with a sapid aftertaste that urges you back for another sip. This Margaux always threatened to develop into a fine Left Bank - now it is finally doing so. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Ferriere 2010 has a sensual bouquet with dark cherries, black plum and a touch of incense. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, nicely judged acidity and a rounded dark plum and balsamic-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Good show for Ferriere. Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2015)

There is a nice depth of fruit on the nose all very black fruited in character. Cassis and black cherry fill out the mid palate with the richness slightly overpowered by the tannins. The finish has sweetness and a nice mix of flavours. 2020-35 Rating: 90 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Château Ferrière

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 The Ferrière family owned their eponymous estate from its origins in the 18th Century right up until 1914. During the 20th Century, Château Ferrière's star fell considerably with the vineyard leased to Alexis Lichine and the wine made at Château Lascombes, and Château Ferrière was rarely seen or known outside France. Ferrière was purchased by the Taillan Group (who own, among others, Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen) in 1988, and the story since then has been of continued improvement. The connection with Château Lascombes was ended and all wines are made at Château Ferrière now. Château Ferrière is the smallest of the Cru Classé estates, with just 8ha of vines dispersed around the centre of Margaux village. 80% are Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (60% new). Both in terms of quality and availability, Château Ferrière is unrecognisable from where it was a few short years ago. Classic, gently assertive Margaux and excellent value for money.
