SANDEMAN

2018

EN PRIMEUR

Lots to like here, with a mix of crushed plum, raspberry paste and blackberry compote notes that work in harmony while fruitcake, bramble and apple wood accents fill in on the juicy finish. Has excellent range and depth. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 94 L&S (Dec 2020)

A blend of 50% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional, 5% Sousão and 5% ‘other native red varietals’ from Quinta do Seixo and Quinta do Vau, both properties on the south side of the Douro in the Cima Corgo: very deep inky ‘black’ colour; demure and brooding on the nose, distinctly ripe, hot country fruit (kirsh) with a touch of liquorice and tar; big, ripe dark chocolate flavours, layered spicy depth, impressively structured with ripe tannins giving plenty of grip and leading to a big, expressive finish, perhaps lacking a little in freshness but very, very good. A definite keeper. 18.5 Rating: 18.5+ Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (Jun 2020)

Scotsman George Sandeman set up business in Tom's Coffee House in London in 1790, trading in Ports and Sherries. An agency in Cadiz soon followed, and then a Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and, by the beginning of the 20th Century, Sandeman Ports and Sherries were to be found all across the world. Seven generations down the line, another George Sandeman can be found at the helm of the House of Sandeman, although the family relinquished ownership in 1980. Sandeman are now owned by Sogrape. Sandeman's most widely admired products are their aged Tawny Ports.
