Deep dark cool and classy with lots of volume. Rich and sweet - good structure which defines the fruit but is not obtrusive. Fairly massive for the vintage, with big cassis and vanillin oaky flavours, very fresh, with great purity and an attractive dry texture. Lovely balance and length. We did not see Marcel Ducasse this year, but this must be a wine which is spot on the style he would like to Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2005)

The 2004 Lagrange has an attractive bouquet with ripe (for the vintage) black plum and wild strawberry, orange pith and light marmalade mixed with cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy entry. This 2004 has softened in recent years. This is quite spicy and smooth in texture. The Merlot, 36% of the blend, shapes this wine. It just tapers a little on the finish and misses a bit of terroir expression and nerve. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2024)
Classic and balanced, cassis, bilberry, touches of rosebud and raspberry leaf. A gentle wine that is easy to drink and easy to love. This was a large crop with yields heading upwards of 60hl/h, which meant careful sorting and green harvesting in the vineyard (Lagrange had been the first in St Julien along with Leoville Las Cases to do so in the 1980s). Eric Boissenot consultant. An old school classic. 60% new oak, 46% 1st wine. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Mar 2022)
