Very good deep ruby colour, and the nose has a harmonious fruit and oak. Fine sweet attack, supple feel. Very attractive, it finishes on fruit rather than aggression. Rating: 91+ L&S (Apr 2005)

The 2004 Larcis Ducasse is surprisingly deep in colour. It boasts a really lovely bouquet considering the vintage, one you might suspect belongs to a richer growing season like 2005: blackberry, raspberry coulis, mint and a touch of juniper berry and sandalwood. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well judged acidity, impressive in terms of fruit intensity: blackberry, cranberry and strawberry mixed with tobacco and black pepper. Very cohesive with a gentle grip on the finish, you could broach this 2004 Larcis Ducasse now, but it will unquestionably give another couple of decade’s drinking pleasure. Punches above its weight. Tasted at the Larcis Ducasse vertical in Bordeaux. Drinking range: 2020 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2020)
One of the real surprises in this tasting, the 2004 Larcis Ducasse is a gorgeous wine for near and medium term drinking. The first signs of aromatic development have set in, as evidenced by a striking bouquet of truffle, cedar, sandalwood and spice box. On the palate, the 2004 is dark and savory, with notable concentration, but in the mid-weight style of the vintage. The 2004 will probably not be as long lived as other wines in this vertical, but it is among the most satisfying today. Drinking range: 2018 - 2034 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2017)
An outstanding effort from the dynamic winemaking duo of Stéphane Dérenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, the 2004 Larcis Ducasse (78% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) possesses complex aromatics of damp forest floor, cedar, cinnamon, kirsch liqueur, black currants, and roasted coffee. Soft, supple tannin, low acidity, and an expansive, fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel result in a seductive, complex, delicious claret. Only 3,300 cases were produced from this great terroir that has an unbelievable exposition. Drink 2007-2022. Rating: 92 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Sept 2011)
Château Larcis Ducasse
At the south-eastern extremes of the St Emilion plateau, the steeper hillsides crowned by Château Troplong Mondot are known as the Côte de Pavie and play host to some of St Emilion’s most exciting vineyards. Not least among them are the various Pavie châteaux, but this is also home to Château Larcis Ducasse. The Larcis name seems to have been used for a wider area of vineyard on the Côte, a lot of which is now part of Château Pavie, whilst the Ducasse comes from a one-time owner, one of several Duscasses to have made a mark in Bordeaux. Henri Raba purchased Château Larcis Ducasse in 1893 and the estate is still owned by his descendants today. Since 2002, Larcisse Ducasse has been managed by Nicolas Thienpont, who also manages Pavie-Macquin, and whose family are intimately woven into the fabric of modern St Emilion; he has been notably assisted by another St Emilion superstar Stéphane Derenencourt. The 11ha of vineyard are planted with 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 35 years. The on-going success of Château Larcis Ducasse, and the quality of its terroir, was rewarded with the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) status in the 2012 St Emilion Classification.
