Eric Prissette is rightly very pleased with this. Suave and soft, fat and round and pure, without going into over-extracted. Bravo. Very fat. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2006)

A high scorer on release, at a point where this was still owned by former footballer Éric Prissette, before it was sold in 2009 to today's owners Alexandra and Nicolas Robin. One of the original band of garagiste wines, this is still showing the oak dominance that was there during En Primeur. It is confident, with a ton of impact but not a lot of nuance, majoring instead on liqourice, bitter black chocolate, spice, damson jam and black cherry fruit. Enjoyable, no need to wait any further to drink, but I definitely suggest a good few hours in a carafe. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 90 Jane Anson, Decanter (Sept 2022)

The 2005 Rol Valentin is absolutely gorgeous. Inky, rich and opulent, the 2005 is supremely well done in this style. Moreover, it has aged impeccably. Blackberry jam, chocolate, mocha and sweet French oak are all kicked up to the maximum. Readers will find an unabashedly flamboyant, heady Saint-Émilion that delivers the goods and then some. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2021)

Bright medium ruby. Pure, penetrating aromas of blackberry, minerals, graphite and flowers. Wonderfully sweet but sharply delineated and light on its feet. The black fruit flavors have an almost grapey primary character today. But this is aromatic, sappy and downright sexy. Finishes very long and perfumed, with terrific energy. Sweet but not sugary. Rating: 90-93 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Dec 2014)

Château Rol Valentin

Château Rol Valentin is one of the relatively new 'Vins de garage' emerging in the Saint-Émilion reigon of Bordeaux. The wines are typically very deeply coloured, intensely flavoured, and generally only made in very small quantities - the estate comprises just 7.3 hectares. Purchased in 1994 by ex-footballer Eric Prisette, who employed well-known French vigneron Stéphane Derenoncourt as the wine consultant at the property, Château Rol Valentin was bought by Nicolas and Alexandra Robin in 2009. The grapes at Château Rol Valentin are fermented in wooden tanks and then aged in 100% new oak barrels.
