Highly aromatic and fresh, with the light spiciness and juicy pear quality of Kremstal Grüner Veltliner, supposedly in keeping with the traditional 'Messwein' used for religious celebrations, and so finishing dry and mineral with the instant appeal of delicately spiced drinkability. Rating: 89 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Feb 2012)

From loess soils in and around the Sandgrub sector at the northeast edge of Krems, Salomon’s 12% alcohol 2010 Gruner Veltliner Messwein is scented and flavored with rhubarb, blond tobacco, and toasted sunflower seeds; offers a lovely balance among stuffing, levity, and refreshment; delivers all this in an infectiously juicy, cucumber-like matrix; and finishes with saliva-inducing salinity. If this were enough to get a believer to mass on Sunday morning, it would also offer a lovely wake-up! It ought to remain attractive for at least another several years. Rating: 88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Nov 2011)

Pretty restrained on the nose - wet stones and a delicate note of citrus. Mouthwatering (almost eye-watering) acidity - a real racehorse with plenty of sinew but no excess flesh. Pure and lean and envigorating but with quite a strong flavour of fresh pear on thefinish. A little monastic!Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2011)

Salomon Undhof

Founded in 1792 SALOMON UNDHOF is a wine estate with a long tradition. The Salomon family from the Wachau produces white wines from the best terraced "Urgestein" sites along the Danube River in Stein and Krems. Today Bert and Gertrud Salomon run the winery. The famous Riesling of the estate thrives on the topsites of Kögl and Pfaffenberg. The Grüner Veltliner Von Stein comes from the steep terrassed hills behind the old town of Stein. The best "loess" soils provide the Lindberg and Wachtberg Grüner Veltliner. All the grapes are harvested traditionally by hand only. Their great vineyard locations and meticulous work in the vineyards are prerequisites for their elegant wines. Wines with finesse and perfect mineral balance reflect the very special micro climate of this lovely river valley. The Estate’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling distinguish themselves through elegance and consistency.
