The 2000 Potensac is open and perhaps more charming on the nose compared to the 2001, presenting red berry fruit, scorched earth and leather, a little feral but well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a minty opening and good depth and grip, though it feels a little monotone on the finish. Maybe decanting this longer would have helped. Still, it’s not bad after 21 years, and it should last several more. Drinking range: 2021 - 2028 Rating: 87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

In my report on the 2000 vintage in issue #146 (dated 4-23-03), I forgot to include my review of the 2000 Potensac. It is a beautiful sleeper of the vintage. Rich and concentrated, it may be the finest Potensac since the 1982. Rating: 89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2009)

Good medium ruby-red. Slightly medicinal aromas of blueberry, dark chocolate and game, with a liqueur-like exotic quality. Tightly wound and penetrating; in a rather brutal stage today, and not showing the lushness or sweetness of the vintage. Finishes firmly tannic, with a note of licorice. Rating: 87 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2003)

Château Potensac

Château Potensac is owned by the Delon family, owners of Léoville-Las Cases and Nénin. Potensac belies its humble Cru Bourgeois status and regularly outperforms its more illustrious neighbours.

The vineyards of Potensac are located in Ordonnac in Médoc. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with approximately 40% Merlot and Cabernet Franc combined.

Yields are severely restricted to around 35 hl/ha (hectolitres per hectare) and rigorous selection for the 'grand vin' consigns roughly 35% of the harvest to the second wine, named Château Lassalle. Michel and Jean-Hubert Delon do not filter their wines as they prefer the more caring approach of fining with egg whites.
