|Grapes||Cab Sauv, Merlot|
The aromatics here are intense, blackberries, vanilla and lilacs, indicating that this will develop beautifully. The palate is full and concentrated with velvety tannins, and leads to a rich and round finish. Probably the best Lupicaia since 1997, but needs time.

The 2001 Lupicaia is another wine that bears the signature of a vintage affected by a spring frost. The wine’s richness, depth and persistence are all marvelous. This is an intense, brawny Lupicaia that is still clearly too young to deliver real pleasure. Still, the wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss. The 2001 is truly exceptional and clearly the finest Lupicaia to date. In 2001 Lupicaia contains a dollop of Petit Verdot, which adds further complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
95 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2010)
The 2001 Lupicaia, which uses the estate's best Cabernet and Merlot, is an impenetrable ruby in color, and the powerful, expansive flavors of berry fruit, eucalyptus, and coconut, the dense and shapely palate, and the rich, sensual finish are the attributes of a wine of superior class and caliber. The wine will drink well for another decade and a half.
93/100 Daniel Thomases, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2006)
Intense aromas of blackberries, with hints of vanilla and lilacs. Full bodied, with velvety tannins and a rich, round finish. Needs time to come together, but generous and rich. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is the best Lupicaia since 1997. Best after 2005.
91/100 The Wine Spectator
(85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% petit verdot) Deep, saturated ruby. Multifaceted nose offers blackcurrant, licorice, coffee and animal fur, along with an elegant mineral element. Silky on entry, then rich and layered in the middle, with dark cherry, spice and mineral flavors given definition by lively acidity on the long, clean finish. This should develop nicely in the bottle.
93/100 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
This was for me the finest of many superb wines at a tasting from 15 estates advised by renowned oenologist Carlo Ferrini. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 18 months in new French oak, it has purity and depth of fruit and structure. Young but approachable. 'Best Old World Red' Decanter April 2008
Castello del Terriccio: Full Wine List and Profile
The Castello del Terriccio estate is one of the most beautifully situated along the entire coastal region, some miles north of Bolgheri. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its warmth and brightness. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines. Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate. These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more. Owned by the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri, once a talented horseman and still a passionate breeder.
