LUPICAIA

2001 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

The aromatics here are intense, blackberries, vanilla and lilacs, indicating that this will develop beautifully. The palate is full and concentrated with velvety tannins, and leads to a rich and round finish. Probably the best Lupicaia since 1997, but needs time. L&S (May 2006)

The 2001 Lupicaia is another wine that bears the signature of a vintage affected by a spring frost. The wine’s richness, depth and persistence are all marvelous. This is an intense, brawny Lupicaia that is still clearly too young to deliver real pleasure. Still, the wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss. The 2001 is truly exceptional and clearly the finest Lupicaia to date. In 2001 Lupicaia contains a dollop of Petit Verdot, which adds further complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Drinking range: 2012 - 2026 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2010)

This was for me the finest of many superb wines at a tasting from 15 estates advised by renowned oenologist Carlo Ferrini. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 18 months in new French oak, it has purity and depth of fruit and structure. Young but approachable. 'Best Old World Red' Decanter April 2008Steven Spurrier (Mar 2008)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
