LUPICAIA

2003 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

Perhaps the least representative of any vintage of Lupicaia, the 2003 is, nevertheless, deep in colour with rich fruit and good acidity, in spite of the heat of the vintage. Still a great wine but for drinking earlier than almost any other vintage. L&S (Jun 2008)

I was very pleasantly surprised with the 2003 Lupicaia. Despite the torrid vintage, the wine has aged nicely and retained quite a bit of freshness as well. To be sure, the 2003 is a super-ripe Lupicaia with tonality in the fruit that recalls blueberry and blackberry jam. Earthy, spiced notes develop in the glass, adding further layers of definition to this dark, brooding Lupicaia. The heat of the vintage is felt most in the tannins, which are marked by the somewhat rough, brawny quality that is typical of that year. That notwithstanding, the 2003 remains a very successful wine within the context of a challenging vintage. Drinking range: 2011 - 2023 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2010)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
