Lea & Sandeman review
A fantastic Haut Batailley - deep colour, black centre, nose of black fruit with a high-toned edge. Very full palate with perfect balance of black fruit and graphitey minerality. Thick feel, but still with good cut and definition. Suave, silky and flattering with black cherry depth. 92/100Other reviews and comments
As usual, the 2005 Haut-Batailley resembles a St.-Julien more than a Pauillac. It possesses a deep plum/ruby color as well as a sweet nose of raspberries, black currants, spice, and oak. Elegant, medium-bodied, and made in a less powerful, structured style than most 2005s, it should hit its peak in 5-6 years, and last for 15 or more.

Deep, fragrant and supple fruit for Pauillac, lovely concentration, suavity and depth, a touch of chocolate, smooth, rich yet fresh. Drink 2010-25.

Aromas of crushed berry, spice and light toasted oak. Licorice galore. Full-bodied, with velvety texture and a long, caressing finish. Another 2000.

Pre-bottling tasting:- One of the finest Haut-Batailleys I have tasted in many years, Xavier Borie has ratcheted up the quality at this estate. Always one of the most St.-Julien-like of the Pauillacs, the 2005 exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, a sweet bouquet of mulberries, black currants, licorice, tar, and flowers, medium to full body, and an elegant, pure personality with a luscious texture as well as a silky finish (atypical for this vintage). Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024.

First year of the new vat-house. Great deep colour. Very pure ripe fruit - lots of polished fruit without particularly obvious oak influence. Extreme sweetness on the front palate. A little bit obvious. Well made but slightly pinched tannins on the finish. Quite perceptible heat on the finish. Almost black cherries. A slightly animal raw note. 2012-18

Deep opaque colour. A lovely black cherry, slightly raisiny nose. Very fresh and intense. Full-bodied, very concentrated, intense rounded black fruits. Slight grainy texture. Very well balanced and pure. Blackberry, touch of tobacco on the finish. A great wine. Lingering black toasty finish. Excellent - one of those wines that might catch people out in blind tastings of the future. Bravo Xavier!

Deep red-ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of currant, plum, smoke, licorice, chocolate and nutty oak. Sweet, lush and ripe but less delineated than the young 2006. Finishes with broad, dusty, chewy tannins and a lightly herbal quality. (May/June 2007)

Good medium ruby. Subdued aromas of black cherry and menthol. Supple and pliant if a bit withdrawn; rather youthfully stunted in the middle today, with a note of fresh herbs but also good chocolatey sweetness. Finishes with good length and freshness. A rather awkward showing today, but I suspect this is simply very unevolved. This will require patience.
