Continuing in their new tradition of releasing a small batch of estate cellared stock at the 10 year mark we were delighted to taste this cracking 2006 when visiting in June. Just released, the 2006 is now drinking absolutely perfectly. a fascinating, evolved blend of 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Petit Verdot and 25% Cabernet Franc from this wild corner in the most southerly point of coastal Tuscany. Blended from the enormous number of plots and sub-plots of vines, each harvested and vinified separately - the meticulous work and attention to detail is clear in the way this wine has evolved. Aged for just over twelve months in oak barrels, the team then held on to a parcel and have given it a further 7 years in the cellars. This is immensely elegant, with lovely intensity of flavour, super suave texture and a beautifully long, layered finish.

The 2006 Monteti sparkles on the palate with beautifully articulated dark fruit, rosemary, mint and French oak. This is a somewhat understated 2006 from the Tuscan coast that relies more on elegance than sheer power, and there is no shortage of finesse here. This continues to gain weight and density in the glass, though, and my impression is that it will develop into a rather muscular wine even if today it is somewhat closed in on itself. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

Tenuta Monteti is situated in the southern part of the Maremma, some fifteen kilometres from the border of the region of Scansano, under the hill of Monteti, an amphitheatre which protects the estate from coastal winds. The twenty-five hectares of vineyard are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Alicante and Merlot in individual lots of one hectare, each vinified separately in the new, state of the art, winery. The wines are marked by a pronounced individuality, reflecting not only the 'terroir' of the region, but more importantly a freshness of fruit and balanced acidity which makes them so very drinkable. They are intentionally understated wines which perform on the palate in a musical fashion - a delicate introduction which builds to the most wonderful crescendo.
