MESSORIO

2007 Merlot Le Macchiole

Grapes Merlot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

Tasting Messorio in its youth it is difficult not to be seduced by its intensely powerful rich, sweet fruit and new oak, all of which needs time to come together. However the 2007 is immediately striking for its elegance too, which is largely as a result of oak selection and shorter time in barrel, as well as an even more rigid selection of fruit in the vineyard. Deservedly sought after and highly priced, but still a lot less than the other famous Merlot of this region, Masseto. L&S (May 2011)

The 2007 is wonderfully fragrant with sweet herb, tobacco leaf, black fruit and exotic spice on the nose and a concentration of opulent, yet focused fruit and fine tannins on the palate. Very long and has a long life ahead. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Jan 2014)

Here we are on the Tuscan coast, where £40 is not an uncommon price and the style is very international though hopefully with an Italian twist. Paleo, 100% Cabernet Franc, is instantly attractive, whether in its chocolate-tinted 2005 or purer fruit 2007 manifestation. But the lottery winner’s option might be Messorio Le Macchiole, 2007, just arrived, 100% Merlot, all £164 of it – but compare Masseto from just down the road at £250. Classic, warm climate, rich fruitcake, Merlot nose, super rich palate in the same vein, ultra smooth and dense, powerful new oak at the moment but perfectly in balance with the fruit and good acidity. Drink (sip?) now or over next 20-30 years. David Way (www.winefriend.org) (Apr 2011)

A soft and decadent wine that makes you want to drink it. Full and velvety, with chocolate and subtle vanilla character interspersed with meat and berry notes. Pure Merlot. Best after 2012. Rating: 93 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2010)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
