Deeply colored. Lovely ripe bouquet entices us with scents of redcurrant, mint, caramel, spices and smoke. The influence of oak is obvious but not overdone. Big, complex and concentrated on entry, with noticeable tannins. It's a delicious, dense, chewy wine, stimulating intellectually and hedonistically. While this wine will benefit from further cellaring, it's mighty good right now. The wonderful finish turns gamey and spicy. This wine is flat-out superb!

(cabernet franc): Saturated medium color. The nose is pleasant but rather youthfully unevolved; we only get hints of red berry fruit, chocolate, earth and alcohol. Much better on the palate: well-made and true to the grape. We give it high marks for complexity and richness. There's noticeable tannin here and this young cabernet franc will no doubt improve with cellaring. It's perfectly balanced and delicious already, "like the porridge that's just right." Long, penetrating finish turns a bit tart at the end.

The 2009 Paleo Rosso has developed nicely in bottle. Grilled herbs, dried flowers, mint, plum and mocha notes meld together nicely in the glass. In this vintage, Paleo Rosso is noticeably opulent and ripe, yet there are plenty of layers of nuance to explore. The 2009 will never be one of the most profound Paleo Rossos, but it is an excellent choice to drink over the near and medium term. 2014-2023

A lush, dark red, whose toasty oak frames its black cherry and plum flavors. This is international in style, showing flashy oak, but with enough fruit to match. The long toast- and spice-filled finish offers an echo of plum.

Le Macchiole: Full Wine List and Profile
Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. Located in Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole. All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
