Vineyard Chevrets

The Chevrets style of rich velvetiness, a denser texture than the Clos des Angles, for example. Nicolas gave this 50% new wood, which this dense fruit simply absorbs without a sign. Serious, long.

Intense in colour with a fine aromatic loganberry-like fragrance of Pinot Noir fruit, and behind the scent wafting from the glass there's opulent blueberry and loganberry concentration whose power and poke is layered with fine spicy oak and vivid freshness. Simply lovely
93/100 (Oct 2014)

Open and expressive red fruit aroma. Succulent fruit palate, which is juicy and rounded and charming. Soft and sweet in the middle and there is an engaging plumpness to the edges enhanced by the velvety tannins. Yes there is a little grip to the tannins which cuts though the flesh and a bite at the end of the palate. There is freshness to the finish and a note of white pepper. Fine+. From 2015/16.

The Chevrets is well defined on the nose with raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of earth. Good definition. The palate is well defined with good acidity, well balanced and harmonious with a lovely caressing strawberry/minerally finish. Very fine.

Reduction renders the nose impossible to evaluate. Otherwise the rich, refined and well-detailed medium-bodied flavours possess excellent intensity on the long, focused and palate staining finish. This beauty is very Volnay in character and should offer 12 to 15 years of upside development potential. 2021+
91 - 93/100

The 2009 Volnay Chevret is a beautifully focused, articulate wine. It shows lovely inner tension and minerality as the fruit works its way through to the finish. The intensity of the dark fruit is quite attractive, while the wine's energy invites a second taste. The vineyards here are 45 and 68 years old. Rossignol used 50% whole bunches on the Chevret. Tasted from tank.
89 - 91/100

Nicolas Rossignol is a new superstar in the village of Volnay, making deeply coloured flavourful wines from his own vines and from the fruit of the family vineyard, where the wines were in the past labelled 'Rossignol-Jeanniard'. He has now agreed with his family that he buys all the fruit, and so the wines are now labelled very similarly, either with or without the word 'domaine'. Since these are all vineyards under his sole control thoughout the year, it really does not make any difference which is which. The character of each site shows through all the wines, but perhaps especially in the beautifully balanced Volnays, which incline to a very bright, transparent, incisive style. Sadly 2012, 2013 and now 2014 have all been hit hard by hail, so these wines are getting a bit rare - the volumes have been catastrophically down.
