Another wine I did not taste, but a style I like a lot. Manager-winemaker Guillaume Pouthier has the dream ambition of making a wine like Haut Bailly, and works toward it using the same principles. The ambition certainly cannot be faulted, and Tim Atkin's inclusion of this in his top 100 wines of the vintage shows he's on the right track. L&S (May 2010)

There is an attractive mix of black fruits on the nose and their ripeness gives it weight and ensures a fleshy start on the palate. Ripe tannins help the richness of flavour with towards the back a classic Graves character, smoky and gravely. 2020-40 Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Full medium red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, black cherry, hot rocks, licorice and herbs. Juicy and moderately intense, with good energy to the dark fruit and spice flavors, which carry nicely on the fresh aftertaste. Tannins are quite suave. For drinking over the next ten years. Rating: 88 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2012)

Mineral, spice, stone and fruit aromas follow through to a full body, with soft, velvety tannins and a pretty finish. Rating: 90-93 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (May 2010)

Château La Garde

Château La Garde is a medium-sized property with 47 hectares of vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet-dominated red wines are soft, well structured and packed with smooth, ripe fruit which makes them very attractive young, though they also possess good medium-term cellaring potential. Bought by the dynamic Bordeaux merchant Dourthe in the 1980s, this gem of an estate displays the true Graves minerality underneath an exuberant cassis-and-plums aroma. After huge initial investment in the vineyard and cellar immense care is now lavished upon the wine itself, and any re-assessment of the Pessac-Léognan classification would surely see this wine elevated to Cru Classé status
