CHÂTEAU LA GURGUE

2010 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Margaux

Grapes Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

The entry point of the Claire Villars line-up shown at Ferriere, and the usual slightly uncompromising sample, shown with final blend and presses included. Knowing how this tastes in 2008 and 2009 (we were shown a little vertical), one can confidently predict that this too will show better a year on than at the primeurs tastings. A Margaux in the same price range as some of the definitely 'lesser' Médoc Crus Bourgeois, this offers solid value. Impressively deep colour, chunky palate weight and real presence. Rating: 89 L&S (May 2011)

Bright red fruits, elegant and lifted, still a little green and raw at the moment. Drink 2015-20. Rating: ***15.5 Steven Spurrier (May 2011)

Some good berry and blackberry character. Medium to full body, velvety tannins. Straightforward. Rating: 88-89 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2011)

The La Gurgue ’10 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. The La Gurgue ’10 has a lifted nose of dark plum, a touch of blackcurrant and a touch of crushed violet. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, a little disjointed at the moment. Quite rugged tannins at the moment but it should calm down by the time of bottling. It is a little broody at primeur but will hopefully “lighten up” by bottling. Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2011)

Château La Gurgue

Despite having two former Mayors of Margaux among previous owners, and a location right in the heart of the appellation, Château La Gurgue was not marked by particular greatness until recent times, registering not more than Cru Bourgeois status in the infamous 1855 classification. Now, however, in common ownership with Château Haut Bages Libéral and Château Ferrière and under the benign stewardship of Claire Villars-Lurton, La Gurgue has rightfully assumed position as a property to watch in the always popular appellation of Margaux. 10ha of vineyard, planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, abut in many places the vineyards of the illustrious Château Margaux.
