FAUGÈRES

2010 Domaine La Sarabande

Grapes Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache
Colour Red
Origin France, Languedoc-Roussillon
Village Faugères
ABV 14%

Paul and Isla Gordon have fashioned some fantastic Faugères in only their second vintage. What most appeals is the closeness of the texture and the sheer exuberant freshness of the aromas, so that the touch of Carignan adds, as they put it 'intrigue' rather than coarseness. Brilliant example. L&S (Aug 2011)

Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre and Syrah. Round, spicy fruit and tannic streak. Mid-weight with good balance. Rosemary George MW Picks from the Languedoc. Decanter magazine March 2012. Rating: 4 Stars Decanter Magazine (Jan 2012)

Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache. Sweet and appealing and fresh, with real structure. 2013-2017 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2011)

A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 15% Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes sourced from our 'Mas de Lanus' and 'La Clavel' vineyards in Autignac. The wine has a deep rich ripe cherry appearance. The aromas are dominated by an elevated fruit character reminiscent of plums with a layer of wild herbs. The Carignan adds a forest floor character with wet earth and mushroom aromas. A proportion of the Carignan underwent malolactic fermentation in 500L French barriques. This adds a very slight intrigue to the aroma and a strength to the palate. The palate is packed with fruit but finishes with smooth tannins and a lingering aftertaste.Winemaker's notes (Aug 2011)

Domaine La Sarabande

Paul and Isla Gordon, who had been making wine the world over for more than a decade, started Domaine la Sarabande in 2009. They were drawn to the region by the schist soils and the old vines, of the classic Mediterranean varieties, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Carignan. As Paul puts it 'we believe these old vines deserve respect'. When they first came to Europe they went to look for a vineyard in Priorat, which has similar vines also on schist, but were put off by the land prices, which would have meant a minimum 20€ price tag on the wine. The vineyard is farmed organically, and the wines are hand-harvested, naturally fermented, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, so as to best express the soils and climate of the vineyard while being technically correct and free of faults - which is perhaps where training in some of the new world wineries gives the Gordons a lead over some of the indigenous growers. We were delighted by the combination of power and delicacy, of complexity along with a clean purity, that the 2010 wines (from only their second harvest) displayed at our introductory tasting.
