Vineyard Chaignots

Chaignots is mid-slope, north of Nuits, in the part of the Nuits vineyard which is closer in style as well as proximity to Vosne. Marie-Christine says it always dries quickly after rain, and always ripens fully. This obviously ripe and rich, although with no overripeness. 'Straight' wine with power and length. Incredible thickness of juice allied to lively purity on a red and black fruit register. This gets 40% new wood (chosen from four different coopers), but the effect is barely discernable. The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Les Chaignots wraps around the palate with layers of black fruit, spices and menthol. It shows fabulous depth and richness in a relatively full-bodied, opulent style for the domaine. It comes across as quite open and ready for business, although it is hard for me to see this not shutting down in bottle. 2015-2025 Rating: 91-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2013)

Bright, deep red. Redcurrant, spices and smoky oak on the rather subdued nose. In a distinctly sunnier style than the village Vosne, with strong soil tones to the musky spice and red fruit flavors. Finishes smoky, saline, tactile and long, with substantial dusty tannins. I don't find quite the eclat of the Vosne villages; despite this wine's firm finish, I'd be tempted to drink it first. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2013)

The NSG Chaignots has their trademark finesse and refinement on the nose: so clear and expressive. The palate is clear and delineated with vibrant acidity, great tension and poise with crushed stone on the crystalline finish. This is an exceptional Nuits St. Georges. Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2012)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
