Quite pale as usual, but there is a lovely fruit, quite strawberried but still straight and linear. The tannins of the vintage, fine and precise, give support, and it is all very delicate and pure.

The slightly smoky note comes from the limestone. Ripe strawberries on the aroma too. Quite heady aromatic nose. Yet then more compact and tight on the palate. This has more energy than Fournaux, which I prefer. Fresh and slightly sappy on the finish. Zip on the end of the palate, a little saline. Lots of limestone here, hence the salinity. Particularly good+. From 2016.

(from south-facing vines on the upper hillside, which features shallow top soil and a lot of limestone): Bright medium red. A pretty coulis of red fruits on the nose, given punch by rose petal, sexy brown spices and crushed stone. Tightly wound, even youthfully tough, with strong minerality contributing to an impression of inner-mouth tension. Lovely tangy red fruits here, complicated on the end by saline soil tones.

Here the nose is notably more refined with a lovely floral element to the wild red berry fruit, earth and wet stone-inflected aromas. There is fine intensity and detail to the middle weight flavors that terminate in a lightly mineral-driven and balanced finish that also displays mild austerity. This is an understated effort that might merit a higher score if it can add depth in bottle. 2018+

One of the great family domaines of the Côte d'Or, housed in the remarkable manor house at Savigny, with excellent holdings in Savigny itself and in neighbouring Pernand and on the hill of Corton. Organic since 1988 and, now, biodynamic (fully certified by Demeter and Ecocert). It is run by brother and sister François and Claude de Nicolaÿ. As François explains, they do not make 'bêtes de concours' or competition wines, but ones you drink. They have over the last few years progressed the renewal of the barrels of the domaine - there is still very little actual new wood, 5% new wood on the premiers crus, and 10% on the Grands crus, but they have replaced the oldest barrels which they have come to understand did have an effect of closing the wines down.
