SINO DA ROMANEIRA

2011 Quinta da Romaneira

Grapes Tinta de Toro, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz
Colour Red
Origin Portugal, Douro
ABV 13%

Beautifully scented (thyme and rosemary) and surprisingly delicate and elegant for a wine from the port-producing Douro, though it does have some of the dark force I like to find in reds from this region. New on English shop shelves this summer and a great buy for those who enjoy the structure of claret. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Jun 2016)

A suave red, with meaty accents to the dark plum, cherry tart and raspberry preserve flavors. Creamy notes linger alongside milk chocolate hints on the complex finish, showing details of forest floor and slate. Drink now through 2019. Rating: 90 Kim Marcus, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2016)

An attractively approachable Douro red from the rejuvenated and now top-drawer Romaneira estate run by Christian Seely (day job: heading Axa Millésimes, owner of Pichon-Longueville, Petit-Village, Suduiraut et al). There's an oakiness on the nose, but on the palate the oak becomes chocolate and vanilla effortlessly integrated into the raspberry and blackberry fruit and easy tannins. Rating: 89 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Apr 2016)

The Sino 2011 is a very pretty light delicate expression of the Douro terroir. Floral and spicy with notes of black pepper and rose petals characteristics of the great Douro grape varieties of Touriga and Tinta Roriz. Well-balanced, smooth and fresh it has a harmonious finish.Winemaker's notes (Feb 2016)

Quinta da Romaneira

Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.

85ha of vineyard, stretching some 3km along the River Douro are planted with both traditional Douro grapes and some plantings of international varieties.

Of course, this being the Douro valley, Quinta da Romaneira produce some very high quality Ports, but the forward focus of the estate is to realise the potential for table wine. In the words of Christian Seely, "our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
