MEERLUST RED

2011

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin South Africa
ABV 14%

There was no Rubicon made in 2011 - so the Meerlust has got all best juice produced at the estate this year. This is a delicious blend of the two Cabernets (Sauvignon and Franc) and Merlot. The Cabernet Franc is pronounced on the nose, with green leaf and cloves, but the palate is full of juicy fruit and a crisp acidity. Wonderful drinking. L&S (May 2013)

Sweet green capsicum, dark chocolate, vanilla and crunchily fresh blackcurrant flavours weave in and out of each other in this delightful, approachable oak-matured Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend. And the price is equally approachable. Rating: 89 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Jan 2015)

Rating: Silver International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014 (Oct 2014)

A granular, polished, Merlot based blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot providing support. This is effectively declassified Rubicon, but it’s not far behind it in class. Well balanced and refreshing, it’s a Cape version of what Brits used to call a ‘luncheon claret’. Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Aug 2014)

Meerlust

Hannes Myburgh is the 8th generation of Myburghs to own Meerlust since they bought the estate in 1756. Aside from vineyards, there is a fine old manor house and estate 15 miles south of Stellenbosch.
The first owner of the property, a German immigrant named Henning Huising, settled there in 1693 and named his new-found home 'Meerlust', meaning 'pleasure of the sea'. They are most well known for the iconic Bordeaux blend - Rubicon - first introduced in 1980. Named after the Rubicon River, the border of ancient Rome, because as Julius Caesar's decision to cross the border profoundly changed the course of Roman politics, so the Myburghs had crossed a new frontier hoping to change the way South Africans thought about red wine.
