STÜRMT DAS SCHLOSS

2011 Blaufränkisch Nittnaus

Grapes Blaufränkisch
Colour Red
Origin Austria, Burgenland
ABV 13%

Hans has let his son Martin loose on this one, a very particular terroir. In the village of Jois, north of the big Neusiedl lake. The vineyard is on the top of a hill, half slate, half limestone. The two soil types were harvested separately, resulting in one 500 litre barrel from the slate, and one from the limestone. Martin says: 'Under the guidance of my father, I let it ferment in wooden casks, and after malolactic fermentation put it in used 500 litre barrels, Austrian oak. For me, the dialogue of the slate and limestone appeared quite thrilling.' It has a very compact silky texture, the finest tannins shot through with a vivid red and black fruit. A very linear 'straight line' of a wine. As Martin says it has a subtle interplay between the lift and freshness of slate and the textural instensity and length of the limestone. L&S (Mar 2014)

(The name of this wine, Stürmt Das Schloss translates as 'Storming the Fortress'). For Martin Nittnaus this wine is a real personal statement: "The fortress is a cobwebbed and dusty concept of a wine in Austrians' heads. Blaufränkisch, our great indigenous variety has become the bodybuilder, raped into an oakinfested, heavy, alcoholic excuse of a Cabernet in the 1990s and early 2000s. I want to storm this fortress and tear it down. The real greatness of this variety, Blaufränkisch, lies in its elegance, its idiosyncratic structure of interwoven tannins, its total linearity and yet appeal to drink, even as a late-ripening variety. We have to storm this antediluvian concept of this variety to finally reach new shores. The Storm the Fortress is my Trojan Horse. "Winemaker's notes (Mar 2014)

The nose has the depth and richness of ripe fruit the palate is fleshy and supple with ripe tannins. Black fruits tend to dominate the sweet fruit enriching the back palate and giving brooding depth on the finish. 2014-2023 Rating: 94 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Mar 2014)

Nittnaus

Hans Nittnaus was introduced to us by Bert Salomon, and we love his red wines. No attempt here to make international wines from foreign grape varieties, which is not what we were looking for from Austria. These are indigenous wines reflecting the 'terroir' of the region. He is undoubtedly a supremely fine red wine maker, and is now following biodynamic practices which will lead to official certification from the 2007 vintage.
