ARAGONEZ

2012 Zero SO2 Terras d'Alter

Grapes Viognier, Aragones
Colour Red
Origin Portugal, Alentejo
ABV 15%

Aragonez is the Portuguese name for Tempranillo and there is certainly some aspects of this rich, creamy and spicy red that bring Rioja to mind. This is powerful and intense with deep dark fruit and silky texture. Peter claims to make this in the 'old-fashioned' way, from vine to bottle with as little fuss as possible. As he says in years gone by this is how it was done - but without modern winemaking conditions and sterile bottles the wine would never last more than a season. As more science became used in winemaking - Sulphur was introduced to kill any bacteria in the wine, allowing it to last longer. For this cuvée Peter simply avoids the Sulphur and claims that with sterile conditions and minimal oxidisation of the juice - there is no need for it. So a swift clean turnaround and the wine is bottled in perfect condition. We were nervous this wine may not last - but after a year - it is showing really well, powerful but a great example of more 'natural' winemaking. L&S (Nov 2013)

Absolutely pristine stuff, with lovely juicy black fruit and tight tannins, there is plenty of structure and beefiness to this, but absolutely nothing volatile or awkward: it is just juicy and fruity, with lovely tannin structure, and the extra year in bottle makes it so deliciously drinkable. Terras d'Alter

Terras d'Alter is in the Alto Alentejo region in the south of Portugal, where the history of wine growing dates back to Roman times. This extensive history, and a focus which remains largely on native Portuguese varietals, is combined with the New World expertise of dynamic & enterprising winemaker Peter Bright, an Australian making wine in Portugal since 1982.
