Grapes Grenache

Origin France, Rhône
Village Châteauneuf du Pape
ABV 16.0%

Kicking off the 2012s, the Châteauneuf du Pape Prestige, which is 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah, has beautiful kirsch, strawberry, dried flowers and licorice aromas and flavors, medium to full-bodied richness, and an elegant, seamless feel. This is a hedonistic, yet balanced and graceful Châteauneuf to drink over the coming 7-8 years.

Bright red. Strongly scented, expansive bouquet displays smoky blackberry, boysenberry and resiny herb aromas, with a bright mineral quality gaining power with aeration. Spicy dark berry and candied cherry flavors stain the palate, picking up a floral note on the back end. Juicy and concentrated but lithe, finishing with strong thrust and cling.
92 - 94/100 (Jan 2014)

Relatively simple, medium-intensity crimson. Elegant Grenache which just explodes in the mouth. A very different, 'purer' style from the tannic monsters. More Clos des Papes. There are tannins, and a little heat, on the finish but this is a wine that could only be Châteauneuf.

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985, and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteaneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has been a big hit in the shops. His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous, and in the context of some of the Parkerised dottiness going on, offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend the star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié is more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie has imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined.
