ENGELGARTEN

2012 Domaine Marcel Deiss

Grapes Pinot Gris, Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Blanc
Colour White
Origin France, Alsace
Village Bergheim
ABV 12.5%
Vineyard Engelgarten

The grape varieties of the 2012 Engelgarten are almost the same as for the Langenberg (Riesling, Pinot Gris and Beurot as well as Muscat), "but the vineyard is very different," says Deiss; and so is the earlier ripening wine, which is grown on lighter (and much warmer), well drained and low-yielding gravelly soils ("small white pebbles"). It opens with a clear and aromatic nose displaying tropical yellow fruits, honeydew melon and ripe stone fruit aromas. Full-bodied, highly elegant, round, and very intense in its rich and white fruit expression on the palate, this is a tight, very minerally structured, well balanced wine with a long and expressive finish, and very good aging potential.

A rich and round wine with sliced apple, dried pineapple and honey character. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, and intensely fruity. Riesling, muscat and pinot blanc, gris and noir. From organically grown grapes. A crazy wine too know. Drink now.

Pale straw-yellow. Jasmine and lemon verbena accent white stone fruits on the nose and in the mouth. Lovely floral nuances repeat on the aftertaste of this very Mosel-like wine. Boasts sneaky concentration and structure (the soils are essentially gravel with a little clay) but comes across as very light and lively. Outstanding stuff.

Jean-Michel Deiss's wines are without doubt among the most exciting of the region. His experimental field blends in the wines he likes to call 'level of Premier Cru' are immensely impressive and worth experimenting with - they each have a definite and unique character, and are some of the most fascinating white wines in the world. Deiss may be a contrary character himself, not always in tune with other producers in the area, but the quality in the wines really does speak for what he has achieved. Biodynamic.
