L'ATZAR

2012 Celler Mas La Mola

Grapes Carignan, Garnacha, Cab Sauv, Syrah, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Priorat
ABV 14%

(made from the estate's young vines; roughly 80% garnatxa, the rest carinyena, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah): Bright purple color. Primary red and dark berry aromas are complicated by smoky minerals, cola and violet. Sappy and youthfully taut on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering vibrant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a hint of allspice. A sweet vanilla note appears on the lengthy finish, which emphasizes berry preserve and spicecake qualities. Rating: 90 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Sept 2013)

With l'Atzar, Alessandro and Jordi wanted to create a wine that offers structure and that can age beautifully, but at the same time is ready to drink young and enjoyable by itself as well as some of the lighter dishes that modern cuisine offers. A funkier and more direct wine than Mas la Mola this is the perfect introduction to Priorat for people who wants to discover the the potential of this wonderful wine region. The vines are planted in different areas in the Poboleda district in a unique microclimate and terroir of Licorella slate slopes. Warm dry long days and cool nights guarantee perfect phenolic ripeness and good level of natural acidity to balance with the powerful character of the fruit. The average vines age is of 20 years. A meticulous and rigorous selection happens in the vineyard where we allow the vines destined to the production of l'Atzar to be a bit more vigorous in order to retrieve freshness and allow the fruit to ripen slowly. A long cold maceration happens in the winery so that fine tannins are extracted. 50% of the wine has been aged fro a short period of time in oak, in order to round the texture but not to give any oak flavours, the rest is left in stainless steel for 8 moths before bottling. A true expression of the Priorat terroir, powerful and seductive with blueberry fruit on the nose and classic flinty mineral Character of the wines from this region. Juicy and fruit driven with tender fruit tannins, plenty of acidity, grippy texture and long black cherries like aftertaste. A truly enjoyable vibrant young wine with enough complexity and structure to last in the cellar for 5 to 7 years Winemaker's notes (Aug 2013)

Celler Mas La Mola

This seven hectare property has been in the hands of the Ferrando family since 1860, and is planted with ancient vines of Garnatxa and Carinyena which give such great results on the famous 'licorella' soils of Priorat. Viticulture and winemaking have recently been taken over by Jordi Masdeu Catala, a young Spaniard in the area specializing in high end wines and former Roka/Zuma group sommelier Alessandro Marchesan.
