COS D'ESTOURNEL

2013 Blanc Château Cos d'Estournel

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux

Lean and fresh to the point of being acidic, but there's a good spicy fruit to go with it. 'Fresh, zippy, straight' says someone else. Rating: 89? L&S (Apr 2014)

(76% sauvignon blanc and 24% semillon): Good pale color. Captivating aromas of stone fruits, lemon, iodine and sage. Very fresh on entry, then ripe and glyceral in the middle, conveying an impression of strong dry extract. Very sauvignon but the semillon gives it added complexity. Finishes juicy and long, with a repeating gooseberry nuance. Made at Goulée, this is the northernmost vineyard of white grapes in the Médoc. The vines were grafted onto 25-year-old cabernet sauvignon vines that already had a deep root system but that failed to ripen properly in this very cool microclimate. The estate likes the semillon here as it adds complexity depth and ageability but they also say their white wine is very hard to taste when young. Rating: 87-90 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

76% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Sémillon. Only 7% new oak. Sweaty and herbal, but somehow charming! Flinty and smoky too, and with a lovely soft texture on the palate. Great length and concentration with a perky lemongrass bitterness on the finish. (RH) Drink 2015-2025. Rating: 17 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2014)

This northern Médoc blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc with 24% Semillon is one of the best whites in Bordeaux. It’s salty and refreshing (could it be the proximity of the ocean?) with subtle, mostly new oak integration and a tangy, thirst-quenching finish. 2014-22 Rating: 94 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2014)
