The 2013 Grecante is a brilliant return to its best. An old favourite of ours - this year Grecante really delivers everything you could wish for. Perky and bright but in a lovely smooth mineral way - more Chablis than Sancerre in feel. There is some grip but just enough to give a little 'feel' in the mouth all adding to the herby, grassy notes making this a cracking glass of wine - summer lunches or evening aperatives would be great occasions to enjoy this charming Italian beauty. Grecante Colli Martani from the region's best producer, Arnaldo-Caprai, is an excellent showcase for the virtues of Grechetto. There's a gentle nuttiness and slightly herbal quality on the nose, then this attractive dry white - which would go well with chicken or river and lake fish - shows a lovely creamy texture on the palate. White wine from Umbria may be more famous under the guise of the all-too-often bland Orvieto, but this is a 100% Grechetto (one of the grapes permitted in Orvieto's blend) and shows refinement and class. Fresh green pea pod aromas with a richness to the palate that includes a touch of honey, spice, and nuts, even a tickle of clove, while its freshness and sour tang are in no question. Goes with creamy or cheesy pastas & risottos, fish & seafood. Rating: 88 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2014)

Arnaldo-Caprai

The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.
