2013 Le Pupille

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 13%

One of the first 'SuperTuscans', Saffredi's first vintage in 1987. From a vineyard for only 6 hectares. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. A firm, bright, style with defined cherry fruit and a crisp concentration (rather than lushness) which unfolds slowly with lovely length. A very classical style of wine, pure and showing early signs of complexity with spice and depth to the flavours. A 'Bordeaux blend', it has the extra energy and ripeness of the bright Maremma sun.

This is another great Saffredi following the perfect 100-point 2012. I tasted it a year ago and thought it was sensational. Even better now. It's so dense and structured yet shows a lively, jazz-like vibe that gives it form and beauty. Needs at least four to five years to soften. Powerful and muscular. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot.
98/100 (Jul 2016)

The 2013 Saffredi wraps around the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Graphite, smoke, wild flowers, black cherries and plums meld together in a powerful, resonant wine built on intensity. The 2013 has a real sense of gravitas, with dark shades of fruit, expressive balsamic-inflected overtones and plenty of nuance.
92 - 95 (Oct 2015)

There is always a single face that identifies a region: A sole producer with the charisma and communicative talents required to perform the ambassadorial duties that bring a relatively obscure wine area to the world stage. For the Maremma, that person is Elisabetta Geppetti(Fattoria Le Pupille)"

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. On the nose an alluring perfume of new leather, sour cherry and wild mushrooms form an ethereal halo over the spiced richness of the body of the wine, steadily drawing you in. On the palate, the vibrant seam of acidity and finely grained tannins provide a chiselled framework for the rich dark berry fruit, spiced chocolate and complex earthy mineral notes, all of which linger on the finish. The wine boasts a power and energy which promises untold aromatic riches in the future, of which it is giving you just a tantalising glimpse now.

Le Pupille is located in the Maremma, in the South of Tuscany and the estate covers 75 hectares under the DOCG of Morellino di Scansano. Considered as the appellation's leading property, the estate produces eight wines with its most famous wine, Saffredi, launched in 1987 by owner Elisabetta Gepetti and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Elisabetta's belief in the quality of the vineyards of the Maremma and her determination to bring them to a wider audience has been instrumental in the emergence of both Morellino di Scansano as an appellation - with elevation to DOCG as recently as 2006 - and Le Pupille as an internationally-acclaimed winery.
