SAFFREDI

2013 Le Pupille

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14.5%

One of the first 'SuperTuscans', Saffredi's first vintage in 1987. From a vineyard for only 6 hectares. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. A firm, bright, style with defined cherry fruit and a crisp concentration (rather than lushness) which unfolds slowly with lovely length. A very classical style of wine, pure and showing early signs of complexity with spice and depth to the flavours. A 'Bordeaux blend', it has the extra energy and ripeness of the bright Maremma sun. L&S (Jul 2016)

The composition of this Maremma classic has evolved over the years. In this vintage it is a straight Bordeaux blend with a distinctive Cabernet bite. Tight and oaky right now, but destined for a radiant future. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 89 Decanter Magazine (Dec 2016)

The 2013 Saffredi is every bit as special from bottle as it was when I first tasted it in barrel. Wonderfully fresh, vibrant and nuanced, the 2013 possesses striking depth to match its explosive personality. A rush of blue and purplish-hued fruits, licorice, spice and new leather built into the powerful, deeply layered finish. The 2013 is a superb edition of the flagship Saffredi. It's as simple as that. Drinking range: 2018 - 2030 Rating: 95+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2016)

This is another great Saffredi following the perfect 100-point 2012. I tasted it a year ago and thought it was sensational. Even better now. It's so dense and structured yet shows a lively, jazz-like vibe that gives it form and beauty. Needs at least four to five years to soften. Powerful and muscular. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Drinking range: 2017 - Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2016)

Le Pupille

Le Pupille is located in the Maremma, in the South of Tuscany and the estate covers 75 hectares under the DOCG of Morellino di Scansano. Considered as the appellation's leading property, the estate produces eight wines with its most famous wine, Saffredi, launched in 1987 by owner Elisabetta Gepetti and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Elisabetta's belief in the quality of the vineyards of the Maremma and her determination to bring them to a wider audience has been instrumental in the emergence of both Morellino di Scansano as an appellation - with elevation to DOCG as recently as 2006 - and Le Pupille as an internationally-acclaimed winery.
