2014 Pinot Noir Bannockburn

Grapes Pinot Noir

Vineyard Bannockburn

Nigel Greening describes 2014 as a style of vintage he really likes, 'charm' and poise rather than mass or impressiveness. This constitutes his 'village' level wine in Burgundian terms, and it is lively and bright, fresh tangily juicy and pure - a lovely Felton Road to drink now and over the next 5 or so years. L&S (Oct 2015)

Bay leaf, juniper and forest floor notes add an intriguing, fresh green edge to the juicy cherry and cranberry flavors, lingering with a note of dried lavender. Drinking range: 2016 - 2026 Rating: 93 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Jun 2016)

(vinified with 25% whole clusters, like all of these Pinots; aged for 11 months in barrel): Medium red. Alluring scents of strawberry, cherry and rose petal gained in perfume as the wine opened in the glass. A bit lean but juicy and energetic, showing a firm edge to the flavors of red fruits, flowers and spices. Delicious Pinot. Drinking range: 2017 - 2021 Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2016)

It's always exciting to try one of NZ's most iconic wineries' new releases and this looks to be another good year for Felton Road with violets, subtle smokiness and luscious black cherry aromas, a smooth and suave coating to the lithe tannins and that deft but perky raspberry fruit with a clean and fresh finish that lingers for as long at it should when you pay this price for a wine. Rating: 92 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Feb 2016)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
