On the whole I have been underwhelmed by the fashionable Viognier in Tuscany, which tends to the flabby and undistinguished. The 2008 Fontarca is Viognier partially fermented in oak. Talk about a wine that has seen an abrupt change in style over the last few years! Delicate floral notes meld into minerals, white peaches and mint in a rich, textured style of notable elegance. There is a pure, crystalline quality to the finish that is incredibly appealing. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. D’Alessandro, one of the historic estates in Tuscany, continues to make important strides under the leadership of consultant Luca Currado.
