Made from all of the 'declassified' wines that do not make it into Lupicaia, Castello and Tassinaia, this is very much the 'second' wine of the estate (I referred to it as the 'illegitimate brother' which failed to raise a smile...). Given a very similar treatment in the cellar, this is something of a bargain, for all of its immediate soft fruit, sweet oak and crisp tannins. All in all, an immensely attractive and elegant wine which will have tremendous appeal.

They regard 2008 as a very good vintage, like 2006. Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot – the leftovers from Tassinaia, from their Castello Rhône blend and from Lupicaia, basically. Fairly light, tartish nose. High toned. Quite lush actually on the palate. You’d be quite happy with this in a restaurant but it’s far from heart-stopping.   16

Another winning Italian that's borrowed a few claret grapes. This Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend may have been made from declassified grapes that haven't made it into the estate's more expensive wines, but it has herbal fragrance in spades with oodles of rosemary, thyme and meatiness too, all of which conjour up aromas reminiscent of a freshly-used roasting tray. Fantastic acidity, refinement and depth of flavour. Sheer class.   93/100

A snappy sappy entry that opens on the mid palate into broad gleaming plum and edges of cocoa and spice. Flattering and very persuasive. Easy to like. (TC)   16.5
