This Sangiovese and Syrah (15%) blend from Tuscany's Maremma coastal region, is packed with bright, expressive fruit. With a riper and crisper approach than Chianti or Nobile di Montepulciano this makes for brilliant summer drinking.

Bright red. Fresh notes of sassafras and orange peel complicate red cherry and strawberry aromas. Enters the mouth sweet and smooth, with syrupy red berry flavors complicated by intriguing nuances of peach and candied orange peel. Finishes satisfying, pure and long. I always like to choose gutsy Italian reds for big bowls of deliciuos rich pasta. 2008 Morellino di Scansano, Heba, Fattoria di Magliano has an immediate cherry perfume and a palate packed with juicy red fruits and a touch of savoury liquorice - it is soft, fresh and easy-drinking, but with enough complexity to cope with tricky ingredients such as chilli and the sweet tomatoes of a winderful 'penne'.

After the 'cocktail and drama' of the previous wine (Longo's Capoposto), this one is so gentle and beguiling that it tugs at the heart strings. Blueberries on the mid palate and a soft curve on the finish. (TC) 13%

Fattoria di Magliano’s 2008 Morellino di Scansano Heba is one of the finest entry-level reds I tasted this year from Tuscany’s very mixed 2008 vintage. A burst of dark red berries is followed by leather, licorice and spices in this mid-weight Morellino. In 2008 the Heba doesn’t quite have the sheer density it usually does. The 2008 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.   90/100
