Vineyard Charmes Chambertin

So Charmes; round and ample, immediately charming. Big. This is really big, and soft as a goosedown pillow. And it would give a good night's sleep too; just luxurious. Bernard says this wine tends to put on weight and flesh in bottle (more?! I find myself wondering if it is possible). There is great depth here, but the balance, the harmony, is what we feel for now.

Contains one-third Mazoyères. 100% new oak. Very dark. Less than 50% whole grapes. Very luscious and spicy. Firm structure underneath. Very flattering. Very fluid for him! Lots of excitement underneath here. 2016-2028

Bright red-ruby. At once liqueur-like and sappy on the nose, with a slightly roasted quality to the maraschino cherry, licorice and earth flavors. Huge and sweet but with a surprising spine of acidity giving the wine excellent inner-mouth energy and cleansing the palate on the superb, mounting finish. Really lovely sweetness of fruit here, with the fine tannins arriving late. In spite of this wine's considerable early appeal, I'd give it a decade in the cellar.

From vines located next to Denis Bachelet in Mazoyeres that are 50% destemmed, the Charmes has a very expressive bouquet with dark cherry fruit, yellow plum, a touch of dark chocolate and a touch of gravel. Good definition, but a little closed. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, a lot of fruit concentration here with dark berries infused with coca and a touch of espresso. Clean and long on the finish, although I would like just a little more tension.
90 - 92/100

This is also quite ripe with notes of mocha, menthol, plum, earth and natural spices that give way to incredibly rich, powerful and palate staining broad-shouldered flavors that possess dry extract to burn before culminating in a monumental, even explosive finish. 2026+
93 - 96/100

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin bursts onto the palate with layers of dark, finely-knit fruit. This is an expansive, broad-shouldered wine that blossoms with notable richness and depth. The intensity of the fruit flows through gracefully to the long, intense finish.
93 - 97/100

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
