GRAND VIN DE GLENELLY

2009 Glenelly Estate

Grapes Merlot, Shiraz, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin South Africa
ABV 14.5%

This is the signature red wine of the Glenelly Estate, a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Aged in French oak 'barriques' (Taransaud), using a combination of new, second and third fill barrels for a total of eighteen months. A very beautifully perfumed wine which immediately strikes you for both its vibrancy and elegance. Sweet spice, tight fruit tannins and a touch of vanillin from the oak combine to make a really exciting and great value wine from the Cape. L&S (Oct 2014)

Biscuity, savoury spiced aroma. You can see the Bordeaux/Stellenbosch crossover here – dry finesse in the tannins but they are firm and thick from the oak. Dark and just a little meaty. Big and bold but still refined and still fresh for a warm vintage. Drinking range: 2015 - 2022 Rating: 17+/20 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2015)

Neal Martin for Robert Parker comments: "The higher proportion of Cabernet lends the aromatics a more austere, Old World personality that is more reserved than its predecessor...the palate is very well balanced with good acidity and very well integrated oak. For under $25 per bottle one has to ask why would you bother with another from Bordeaux?" From the South African estate of May de Lencquesaing, former owner of Pichon Lalande, the French quality influence is clear here. The Wine Merchant (Sept 2015)

The blend is 42% Syrah plus mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and other bordeaux varieties. Deep crimson. Syrah dominates when it’s young which has hindered sales, but it’s receding now and this is a fine, spicy well integrated red blend. Pretty serious. Ripe but not sweet and good tannin quality. Glenelly Estate

Glenelly Estate in the Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, is the home estate of May de Lencquesaing, previous owner of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Bordeaux. This is no retirement home, but an ambitious project to make serious wines in one of the Cape's most beautiful and best sited vineyard areas. May has recruited Luke O'Cuinneagain as winemaker, whose career includes Chateau Fieuzal, Angelus, Screaming Eagle and five years at Rustenberg before joining Glenelly. He is assisted by Adi Badenhost as consultant winemaker. There are three ranges of wine made at the estate. The 'Glass Collection'; premium varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. The 'Grand Vin': the signature blend of the estate, using Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 month in oak barrels. 'Lady May'; the flagship wine made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in new oak.
