QUINTA DO NOVAL

2011

Origin Portugal, Port
ABV 20%

'Noval's 2011 will be a bit like the others but better if you need to write something...' so Jancis Robinson was told helpfully by Christian Seely - MD of Quinta do Noval. He missed the boat of our initial Port Offer, by declaring his delicious 2011 a little later than the other houses. As such he also missed the early opportunity to get the press to taste it. We noted it well on its unveiling at the London Wine Trade Fair - Delicious intense nose of raisin and fig paste - leads into a lovely rich full feel in the mouth. Sweet, dense fruit - lovely damsons and crisp plums marked out beautifully with lovely, lifted elegance that keeps it very light on its feet and surprisingly easy - very good. L&S (May 2013)

The 2011 Vintage Port is very complete on the nose, focused and full of energy, with touches of grilled walnut and sage filtering through the black fruit, quite earthy in style (more than I remember.) The palate is very classy and complex with black fruit, sage, black pepper and an endearing, slightly powdery texture towards the finish. This has shed some of its puppy fat - a bit more serious now and worth cellaring for another three to four years. Tasted at the Quinta do Noval tasting at Spring restaurant in London. Drinking range: 2030 - 2070 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2022)

Deep, saturated ruby. Tight, high-pitched aromas of black fruits, minerals, spices, printer's ink and licorice, complicated by nutty and earthy nuances. Juicy, savory and youthfully imploded; not hugely opulent or sweet but a wine of great density and class, showing a pliant texture and no rough edges. This seemed even more intense after I swallowed it, showing a palate-drenching quality with no weightiness. Doesn't have quite the dimension or floral complexity of the Nacional but a wine of great finesse, and built for decades of life. Rating: 96 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2014)

The 2011 Quinta do Noval has wonderful precision on the nose with blackberry, cassis, intriguing flinty notes and a whiff of smoke. It might not possess the power of the Naçional but it has freshness to spare. That comes through on the beautifully composed palate, which is underpinned by fine tannins that lend it a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is real intensity here, but it is very controlled with superb minerality on the finish. Excellent. Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2013)
