BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2006 Fuligni

Grapes Sangiovese Grosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
ABV 15%

Beautifully fine and textured, with sweet ripe fruit and polished tannins. Very long and with a long life ahead. Tasted in a line-up alongside the 2005, 2004 and 2001 vintages this was quite remarkable, even at such a youthful stage in its development. The fact that Roberto is using larger oak barrels has had an immediate influence on the elegance and persistence of this beautifully pure expression of Sangiovese. This is great Brunello. 2014 - keep a little longer if you can. Rating: 95 L&S (Jan 2011)

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino from Fuligni was a littler juicier, richer and rounder than the Costanti. Few producers do a better job of bridging modern and traditional styles than Fuligni. What a beautiful wine. Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Sept 2013)

Just starting to evolve into a drinking window of 10 years plus, this is an immensely seductive Tuscan red made from pure Sangiovese (as Montalcino requires for Brunello) displaying delicately smoky, herby aromas that combine with the lightest touch of spicy oak. On the palate there's suave-textured, complex dark red berry fruits and the suggestion of a gamy, mouthwateringly savoury future to come Rating: 94 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Feb 2012)

Bright dark red. Captivating nose shows a medicinal quality to the notes of sandalwood, minerals, graphite and orange peel. At once silky and explosive in the mouth, providing oustanding density without heaviness and saturating the entire mouth with sweet flavor. A wine of incredible aromatic thrust. The floral lift on the extremely long finish gives the wine an almost Lafite-like clarity. Rating: 96 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2011)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
