My, how things have changed with regards German wines...
Once, Liebfraumilch was king and every wine shop in the land sold a range of such things, often in unfeasibly large bottles. But German wines disappeared from fashionable dinner tables when we discovered Aussie Chardonnay and they have been a hard sell for most of the time ever since. Until now, that is. There's a generation for whom German wine is "new", and on the back of the rise of German Pinot Noir there is renewed interest in German white wine too.
The word "trocken" (dry) is now in evidence on many a German wine label providing comforting reassurance to the nervous.
Riesling still dominates the range and few countries or regions excel at Riesling like the Germans, but it is worth casting an eye over other varieties too.
