Cooler ground than the village wine, deeper clay which suffered less from the drought than the village-level cuvée. The first wine to show a touch of oak on the nose, but behind that is a great depth of fruit - a big dark fruit character which will easily absorb any oakiness. Philippe says this is always quite massive, a big dense wine, always with good acidity. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 L&S (Nov 2021)

Domaine Huguenot
The Huguenots can trace their history in Marsannay and working in the vines back to 1789. Currently the domaine is run by Philippe. His father Jean-Louis expanded the domaine from five to twenty-two hectares (twelve in Marsannay, six in Fixin, and four in Gevrey) before handing over the reins. Philippe took the bold step of taking the whole domaine into organic production (the conversion was completed in 2010), but immensely sadly he was forced to do a single non-organic treatment in 2016, because of the terrible conditions, so he was back to square one - three years to re-qualify for the organic label. Nevertheless Philippe, although initially unsure if he would try for the certification again was not planning to change the way he works - it is, he assures us, better for him and the environment and and his workers as well as for quality. So he fought his way back, and the wines have been certified organic again since 2019. Philippe now has 23 hectares in production.
2025 THE LUXURY CHRISTMAS MIXED CASE
There is a particular joy in spending a little bit more on a bottle of wine. You aren't just paying for a label; you are paying for artistry, patience, and the silence of the cellar. This Christmas, we have curated a collection of true heavyweights, wines of grand confidence that will elevate your festive table from lovely to legendary.
We start with two serious Champagnes: the full-bodied, round and rich 2019 Grand Cru from Marc Hébrart and the biodynamic Larmandier-Bernier 'Latitude', which offers chalky minerality and the smell of freshly-baked bread. For the whites, we've selected a pristine and pure Condrieu from Domaine Rémi Niero bursting with peach, apricot, and honeyed flowers, alongside a creamy Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru from Domaine Berthelemot.
The reds are a roll-call of the world's finest terroirs. From Bordeaux, enjoy the perfectly mature 2012 Château Haut Bages Libéral, a sweet and suave Pauillac with notes of coffee beans, and the vivid and striking 2018 Clos de l'Oratoire from Saint-Émilion.
From Burgundy, there is a massive Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru with great depth of fruit. Italy is represented by a rich Brunello di Montalcino and a Barolo from very old vines that balances delicacy with broad power. We've also included a juicy Côte Rôtie from Domaine Bonnefond.
To finish? The exceptional Sandeman 20-Year-Old Tawny. It is smooth as a baby's bottom and eminently sippable. Serve it slightly chilled for the ultimate festive treat.
