2014 Domaine Tempier, Bandol - Pre-shipment Offer

Of the 53 independent producers in Bandol, Domaine Tempier is without doubt, top of the pile. No surprise really when you remember that Lucien Peyraud and his wife Lulu (née Tempier) were hugely instrumental in getting the appellation of Bandol established in 1941 and focusing on the Mourvedre grape once again. Lulu lives on and now at 99 is still a fabulous hostess and entertainer, but since 2000 the talented Daniel Ravier has overseen the winemaking here and the domaine continues to set the standard of quality both in the vineyards and the winery..

It is often assumed that there is very little vintage variation in this part of the world but nothing could be further from the truth. Small yields and challenging conditions have resulted in Domaine Tempier producing some intriguing red wines from the 2014 vintage that really do defy the odds. The wet winter, humid spring, relatively cool summer and eventual hail in September could not defeat the Tempier team and the results are hugely impressive. This is a world class winery producing benchmark wines for the region. With each vineyards' personality shining through despite the apparent difficulties. It is this unflinching ability to produce fascinating, detailed and delicious wines, no matter what the vintage brings that has lead to Tempier's cult following around the globe. A recent visit to taste in the cellars with Daniel was a huge treat and a long-term ambition fulfilled. For wine-lovers this is a special place -

'...I shared the most intense drunken orgy of my post-college life with Kermit Lynch (US Wine Importer) at Domaine Tempier in the early eighties....  Lulu and Lucien Peyraud greeted us with a bottle of well-chilled Tempier rosé. As I recall, several bottles of this rosé were gulped down before we ever entered the house.' Robert Parker

These are powerful wines with long futures and deep power, but it is their refinement and elegance which is simply mind-boggling. These really are fine wines that deserve huge attention, wines for the patient, yes, but also wines that really will be worth the wait!
We are therefore delighted to offer the following pre-shipment offer for this unique vintage which should offer excellent medium to long term drinking.
NB Cuvée Cabassaou is in tiny quantities and will only be sold in conjunction with other wines as part of this offer.

More spice, black pepper, black cherry and blackberry, floral violet back notes. Lovely directness - this soars across the palate as though on a high plain. Then good, rich tannins but ripe acid, lovely fragrant almost angular dark berry fruit delivery; damson, blackberry, spice and aromatic herbs, finishes with surprising fleshiness and gentle hold. Quite a ride. Drinking range: 2017 - 2027 L&S (Jul 2017)

A textbook example of all you should expect and yet so much more! As every year it is a marker for the appellation, an almost perfect wine. Even in 2014 there is an underlying depth of rich black fruits, ground pepper, fragrant herbs, lovely delivery on the palate, touch tighter wound, more powerful and yet sweeter. Blackberry and ripe, ripe raspberries all curbed gently by the juicy, building tannins. Great length and long, pure feel. Drinking range: 2017 - 2037 L&S (Jul 2017)
