Best Value Bordeaux Wines
We had too many good wines to choose from when voting up the wine of the week, so we decided to draw up a short list of our best value and affordable drinking Bordeaux between £11.95 and £37.50. Over time this has extended into a larger list as our Bordeaux wine list has grown.
When we say 'value' we don't mean 'passing-off' stock, we mean seriously good wines with respectable prices that sport robust reviews and awards from some of the world's best wine critics and competitions, a combination hard to find in Bordeaux these days.

2015 CHÂTEAU PUYBARBE Cuvée Apanage Côtes de Bourg
Bordeaux France 13.5% Red
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
This new find is an absolute humdinger. Brilliant Bordeaux at a very sensible price. From the highest point at the heart of the Côtes de Bourg. This has all the breadth and richness you'd hope for from 2015 - but this deep fruit is so well handled, the good rich, chewy fruit has a su...(read more)

2014 CLOS MANOU Médoc
Left Bank Bordeaux France 13.5% Red
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot. Half-bottles
Having tasted several Margaux wines before this - the change in intensity comes as somewhat a shock. Wham, this is serious, intense, deep dark fruit, whiff of nutmeg and nice oaky spice. Good lines, polished fruit and lovely balance. Properly crafted claret. Impressive.

2016 LA RAISON D’HÊTRE Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Bordeaux France 14% Red
Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
The second wine of L’Hêtre, a new wine in the distinctly up-and-coming AP of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. Owned by the Thienpont family, organically farmed and situated high on the limestone plateau to the east of St-Emilion, this is great value considering its pedigree. 95% Me...(read more)

2011 CHÂTEAU PUYGUERAUD Côtes de Francs
Bordeaux France 14% Red
Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
From the Nicolas Thienpont family of estates (which includes Pavie Macquin and Larcis Ducasse) the Puygueraud is juicy and intense with ripe fruit exploding on the nose and a generous palate of cassis and black cherry. A great, open, crowd-pleasing style of claret that would tackle roast p...(read more)

Our 2015 own label claret once again punches far above its weight in both price and quality. Loaded with plum and blackcurrant notes, the wine has lovely weight and concentration. 2015 CHÂTEAU BEAUMONT Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Haut Médoc
Bordeaux France 13.5% Red
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
Make this cigar-box-scented Beaumont from a good vintage your go-to Christmas claret. Its rollicking, almost 50-50, stylishly oaked mix of cabernet sauvignon and merlot is a classic, chunky crowd-pleaser.

2016 CHÂTEAU LA MAURIANE Puisseguin Saint Emilion
Bordeaux France 0% Red
Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
We visited the La Mauriane cellar with Pierre Taix, and tasted the 2016 in its three component cuvées as well as an approximation of the final blend. The Merlot from the chalky hillside had fantastically delicious precision, juicy, fat and supple, but above all expressive. The Merlo...(read more)

2015 CHÂTEAU DE MALLERET Cru Bourgeois Haut Médoc
Left Bank Bordeaux France 14% Red
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
As soon as you put your nose in the glass - you can sense the class of this polished beauty. The fruit is dark and quite serious. There are lovely notes of damson and baked plums. This classic core is lifted and softened by some sweeter, riper black-fleshed berries. There are lovely baking...(read more)

2016 GEORGE Cuvée du Château Puygueraud Francs
Bordeaux France 14.5% Red
Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
This lovely youthful cuvee demonstrates good rounded acidity with subtle notes of blackcurrant, cedar wood and black plum. Its mid-bodied mouthfeel would partner any good game bird dish or a more classic red meat roast or stew. L&S
