Château Bélair Monange

France, Bordeaux

Château Bélair Monange was bought by the Moueix company in 2008, and has been undergoing a renaissance under their care. It is pretty tiny, at 12.5 hectarees, planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, well-sited partly on the limestone plateau, partly on the clay and limestone 'coteau'. Bélair (the Monange was added by the Moueix family after the wife of the first member of the family to settle in Saint Emilion) was a name to conjure with even only thirty years ago, but the property had been allowed to fall into disrepair. Further back it was even regarded as the 'first among the firsts' - the top-ranking saint Emilion property. There is no question that this is a potentially great terroir, and with the 2015 vintage seems to be coming back to life.
