Set up 10 year's ago Bodegas Ego is located in the heart of Jumilla, between the high plains of La Mancha and the Mediterranean to the east. These two features have a great influence on the climate - largely continental, this is a very warm region for growing grapes - with long, hot summers and cool, wet winters. These are ideal conditions for the native Monastrell grape, which naturally ripens slowly and has thicker skins than many grapes giving perfect defence against these extreme conditions. The twenty-five year old vines produce classically small bunches which are harvested in early October by hand, once they are at optimum ripeness - with a good concentration of sugar, excellent acidity and an impressive weight of fruit. This super wine is certified 'organic' and no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers are used in the vineyards at all - preserving the pure fruit expression and importantly the health of the land. Their delicate approach to the wine making continues with the ageing process - just a short burst of two months in old American Oak barrels adds gentle spice and a creamy feel to the fruit, From their rather hick-looking winery (certainly built for function rather than beauty!) the team at Bodegas Ego are making super-fine wines at this price-level. With all the latest technology, combined with brilliant wine-making they are able deliver the purity of fruit and the best expression of Monastrell possible, a delight to drink this juicy, spicy wine simply sings from the glass.
