The Sandeman 1934 Vintage Port is a rarely seen wine. This bottling by "Bentley & Shaw Ltd of Huddersfield" was unusually followed by a declaration the following year. The 1935 appears to be the better of the two. Still, this is not to be overlooked. It feels a little smudged on the nose that is quite resinous, with scents of clove, bay leaf and antique furniture. The palate has a tang of bitter cherry on the entry that lends this tension. For sure, it does not possess the depth of the 1935, but there is a pleasant desiccated orange-peel and cedar-tinged finish that is placid and refined. Tasted May 2015. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com (Jul 2015)

Scotsman George Sandeman set up business in Tom's Coffee House in London in 1790, trading in Ports and Sherries. An agency in Cadiz soon followed, and then a Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and, by the beginning of the 20th Century, Sandeman Ports and Sherries were to be found all across the world. Seven generations down the line, another George Sandeman can be found at the helm of the House of Sandeman, although the family relinquished ownership in 1980. Sandeman are now owned by Sogrape. Sandeman's most widely admired products are their aged Tawny Ports.
