1964 Very Old Single Harvest

Origin Portugal, Port
ABV 19%

This is a 50 year old Colheita - a Tawny Port from a single vintage - these days it seems this style is often called 'Single Harvest' in case 'Colheita' causes confusion. Unlike Vintage Port this wine has been aged for many years in a cask, rather than a bottle, which gives it the lighter, tawny colour. It is also bottled so there is no need to decant when serving. From this single barrel just 2,000 bottles are available globally, so it really is a very limited release. Packed in a very smart beach-wood single case this fabulous drink would make the perfect present to help celebrate fiftieth birthdays or remarkable anniversaries. Pale green-tinged tawny, this immediately gives off penetrating aromas of dried fruit and polished wood, round on the palate with both richness and concentration, the dried fruit flavours lifted by acidity. Very long and altogether a treat. L&S (Dec 2013)

I allowed my glass of 1964 Taylor’s Very Old Single Harvest Port a couple of hours to open up in the glass, monitoring its evolution along the way. It is not a shy or retiring Port. Clear mahogany in color with a slight green tinge on the rim, the nose races out of the blocks like a young terrier let free in the garden, with intense aromas of grilled walnut, smoke, brown sugar, hints of caramel and a fug of alcohol that ebbs with time. The palate is smooth and honeyed on the entry, a very seductive Port wine, quite sumptuous in style, but with enough volatile lift to maintain fieriness toward the viscous finish. I speculate that had the 1963s not been so prodigious, Taylor Fladgate would have elected to follow their 1960 declaration with a 1964. That is all in the past. It is a delicious Vintage Port firing on all cylinders, ready to drink and enjoy now rather than cellar. Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2014)

Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2014)

Amber-tawny in colour with an olive green rim; lovely, clear, slightly lifted caramelised aromas with a touch of butterscotch; soft and suave with rich, spicy flavours, full and round, quite sweet in style which just stops short of cloying on the finish. Fresh, delicate length. Beuatiful balance and a remarkable wine at 50 years old. 2,000 bottles to be released. Rating: 18.5 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (Mar 2014)
