This has been opening up into full sumptuous expression for the last few years and now at 40 is seriously attractive. Displaying the full panoply of dark fruit, cherry and cassis, with liquorice and a rich, full-bodied chocolatey, wood-spice and a glorious, rich, walnutty finish. L&S (Jun 2017)

Wonderfully rich, the black fruits fill out the nose and although sweet there is a touch of firmness adding to the attractive complexity. The palate has a lush power, lots of bramble mixed in the bilberry, all refreshed by that hint of mulberry. Although lush and voluptuous there is freshness and nice structure. 2007-20 Rating: 96 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk(Dec 2013)
Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Rating: 93-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com(Oct 2013)
Really perfumed – cedarwood and cigar box. Cedarwood and sandalwood and cinnamon – incense-like. Rich and generous on the palate, but perhaps not as fresh as 1970, more nutty. Tasted 21/10/10 Rating: 18/20 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com(Nov 2012)
Splendidly full colour. Very fine nose’ Lovely fruit. Very composed. Multi-dimensional. Very classy. Quite firm still and very vigorous. This is very, very lovely. Still youthful. Fullish body. Real harmony and very intensely flavoured. Splendid grip and concentration. Brilliant! Rating: 19.5 Clive Coates MW(Sep 2011)
A very good wine. Almost black in colour in 1979: a big apple-nosed, very sweet, rich but angular wine. Gradual colour loss through the 1980s but, as it matured, a wonderful mélange of fragrances developing: liquorice, strawberry, fig, fleshy, lovely fruit.... In 1995: medium-deep with red-brown rim; very rich; powerful bouquet opening up beautifully; sweet, good body and backbone, marvellous length, spicy finish. Most recently: delicious! ****(*) Michael Broadbent MW(Mar 2005)
Part of the Symington port 'empire'. Founded by Scotsman Andrew James Symington who arrived in Oporto in 1882 and initially joined Graham's.
The Symington family own other big names in the port industry such as Warre & Co, Dow's, and Cockburn's to name but a few, and are the largest vineyard ownership group in the Douro.
