Still quite tight-knit on the nose, mid-weight with gentle, rather lovely cherry fruit and a spicy vestige of the firm tannins that were the hallmark of the 1983 vintage at the outset. The nose has filled out a bit with some nice sweet black fruits showing. Not as intense a crimson as the 1980. Quite a wide colourless rim. Burnt, sweet, almost charred nose. The overwhelming impression is one of slightly simple sweetness. Can’t see any tannins left here – until the very end. Jewel-like – sort of rubies in a glass. Exceptionally rich and on the finish quite delicate in fact.
