Very deep colour. Restrained, underlying fruit nose, brooding yet ripe; not giving away much. Soft and ripe initially with big structured tannins building in the mouth, and leading to a massive peacock's tail of a finish. Still not showing to its full potential; needs five more years in the bottle and will be very fine. Drinking range: 2019 - 2050 Rating: 96 Decanter Magazine (Dec 2014)

Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. Best after 2012 Rating: 100 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Sep 2011)
Very, very dark crimson with the tiniest hints at evolution at the rim. Some green leaves and definite life. Now this wine has concentration of fruit right through the tasting experience with a sweet start and a good, dry, appetising finish. Real vivacity and length. 2007-2020 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sep 2011)
Very closed in comparison with the 1995 Guimaraens - stately and dense. Hints of spice, fruit-cake, violets and blossom. Pure, focused, very ripe and youthful - beautiful red fruit preserve flavours, and impressive length. Still extremely young and hasn't even begun to hint at much secondary character on the palate yet. 2018-2038 Rating: 17+ Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sep 2011)
Fonseca
Manuel Pedro Guimaraens bought out the Fonseca family's share of Fonseca & Monteiro in 1822, sold with the proviso that the Company would always bear the Fonseca name, and the Guimaraens family have controlled Fonseca ever since, even after absorbtion by Taylors, Fladgate & Yeatman in 1948. Not long after taking control of the Company, due to his support of the deposed King Pedro IV, Manuel was forced to flee Portugal (allegedly in an empty wine barrel) and settled in London, from where Fonseca was run until 1927 when the Guimaraens family returned to Portugal. David Guimaraens is the winemaker today, not only at Fonseca but Taylors too. In recent years especially, Fonseca and Taylors have elevated themselves clearly above their rivals for the sheer quality and prestige of their Vintage Ports.
