The 1996 Rauzan-Ségla is a vintage that has not matured as well as I hoped. It offers a slightly smudged bouquet with undergrowth infused black fruit laced with tar, this particular bottle a little more citric than others that I have encountered over the years. The palate is better, as I have found before, with cedar and white pepper infused black fruit, and refreshingly saline. Yet, it feels a little surly towards the finish, the tannins a little dry. I cannot see much upswing in this Rauzan-Ségla after 22 years. Not bad, but surpassed by subsequent vintages. Tasted at the Vinous 1996 Bordeaux tasting at Berry Brothers & Rudd. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2019)

Looks more evolved than the 1995. Lightly floral nose – very pretty. Very beautifully balanced and very Margaux. Fragrant and lovely lift. But with good fully ripe fruit underneath. 9% press wine in here. Really riding the crest of a wave. They are starting to serve this vintage at meals, decanting two hours before. Sweet finish. Real lightness of touch – just what claret is about. Fine tannins on the end. The only slight weakness is on the finish – not that persistent. Drink: 2010 to 2028 (Tasted February 2011) Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2014)

The dense, ruby/purple-colored, unfriendly-styled 1996 is tannic, backward, and in need of 8-10 years of cellaring. The wine does seem to possess the requisite fruit and extract, however, to stand up to its powerful structure. Although pure and rich, this wine should not be touched for at least a decade. The sweet cassis aromas of this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine are combined with floral and mineral notes. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Rating: 88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Mar 2005)

Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 1999)
